The recent flooding in Thailand is having a big impact on availability of certain tech components, especially hard drives and cameras.
A large proportion of the worlds hard drive manufacturing is in Thailand. The floods there have caused the closure of two of the biggest hard drive manufacturers' factories - Western Digital and Hitachi.
The effect of this is that availability of standard drives is short, and prices have shot up.
The industry is keen to direct availble supplies to PC and laptop manufacturers, so the net effect is that retail availability is hardest hit, and costs have soared in this sector.
Already we are seeing up to a 100% increase in retail prices for one off drive purchases, and it is anticipated that systems will go up by at least £50.00 by the end of the month. Suppliers seem to be keeping stock back for system builders who order drives with corresponding parts for a full system, and restricting supply to individual drive requests.
Anyone experiencing a drive failure in their PC or laptop now could be in for a bit of a wait and a very large bill for replacement. EBuyer, one of the largest on line component suppliers to the public, have their cheapest 500Gb standard PC hard drive at £100.00 exactly today, 03.11.2011, as opposed to a normal price of £44.00, and this is set to increase. Other drives are showing increases of up to 180%.
So, if you have a back up system in place, make sure you are up to date, and if you havent, then make sure you create aback up on DVD or memory stick just to be safe.
