The BBC have done an excellent article on a very common phenomenom at the moment - Scareware.

This is intrusive software that pops up on susceptible websites, frightening users into thinking they have a problem. There is, of course, no problem, and the pop up is really just a very aggressive advert.

The most prolific "attacks" are for Registry Cleaner XP and Windows Antivirus 2008/2009. They are not real programs.
